The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords to not require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation companies of the obligatory conditions, as provided by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement concerning the personal accommodation companies and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS mentioned in a press release on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states the lease is going to be paid every month on the accommodation provider (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf with the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance using the NSFAS terms and conditions for personal accommodation companies’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

The lessor shall don't have any recourse against the lessee for any default while in the payment of rent by NSFAS," the arrangement reads.

NSFAS defined that where the NSFAS-funded nsfas student allowances student chooses to carry on occupying the leased premises, notwithstanding getting defunded by NSFAS, the student is going to be chargeable for payment of hire to the lessor in the date of becoming defunded.
